Silent films, they’re stuffy and boring, right? That’s certainly what I thought until recently, when one movie changed my mind.

The Man Who Laughs (1928) is a silent film based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. When a proud noble refuses to kiss the hand of King James in 1690, he is cruelly executed, and his son is disfigured by the king. Later, he will become the pawn of royalty and the star of the freak show of a travelling carnival.
