  • Why Does the US Give Egypt Military Aid, But Not Economic Aid? | The Hastening Rewind

That boat getting stuck in the Suez Canal was actually what spawned this whole idea of crypto-imperialism that the Hastening is all about. Isn’t the canal the main point of spending all that money on Egypt’s military, from a US perspective?

Israel is the other big factor there (the US needs an Egyptian government that does what Israel says and maintains the peace accords, in spite of overwhelming Egyptian public opposition to that). But keeping the Suez Canal open and de-politicized, preventing another Nasser-type leader from coming to power there, is the other main goal.

It says a lot that the canal is having to raise private funding for renewal, rather than the US stepping up to make sure the canal is up to par and unlikely to face closures due to mechanical and technical failures.

Infrastructure is a touchy subject here though, considering US infrastructure, and our own canal system along the Mississippi River is badly in need of renewal too. US politicians can’t get away with a Suez renewal without doing US infrastructure renewal, and they won’t do that because of the price tag.

Meaning the economic conditions in the empire deteriorate, and our proxy state in Egypt gets ever closer to collapse. Since the October 7th Al Aqsa Flood, this has only gotten worse for Egypt, as the Ansar Allah (“Houthi”) targeting of US, European, and Israeli shipping near the Bab el Mandab has cut traffic through the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal, dramatically, cutting into Egypt’s revenue from canal tolls and pushing canal renewal projects even further off into the horizon. This is what crypto-imperialism looks like.
