The Hot Seat, the US diplomatic and media effort to create support for regime change actions against countries acting out of line with US goals, is crucial to understanding how we got to where we are now with Iran.
When the 1979 Revolution in Iran overthrew the US-puppet Shah, the US immediately cranked up hostility towards Iran in the media. They’ve been a central feature of US news coverage for decades, a pantomime villain invoked in TV and movies, maligned in every possible way to eventually get Americans to passively accept a war against them, and to support decades of sanctions against them.
And here we are; the groundwork was laid so thoroughly to support this war that the Trump regime didn’t even feel it necessary to make any case before they started bombing, they just moved military assets into the region and went to town.
We can also see the effects of The Hot Seat seeming to wear off on the public — this appears to be the most unpopular war in modern US history in its early days.
